So you’ve graduated college and now you’re a “real” adult right? It might not feel like it. The college atmosphere doesn’t exactly prepare you to tackle this new chapter of your life. But don’t worry, we’re here to help you learn what you need.
Make a budget
If you weren’t an accounting major, then odds are this might be a whole other world for you. But trust us, it’s not as difficult as it seems.
STEP 1: Calculate your earnings
Odds are, you now have your first salary job. You’re making more money than you ever had. But you also have more expenses than you ever had. Document your weekly and monthly pay, whether that is based off an hourly or salary wage. Account for taxes that will be taken out as well! Just because you are making $15 an hour, it doesn’t mean you’re earning every cent of that.
STEP 2: Calculate your expenses
Make a list of all of the monthly costs you have. When accounting for living expenses, be sure to include utilities (gas, electric, water, wifi, etc.). You may be thinking, okay I have my rent listed, what else do I spend money on? Groceries? Gas? How about that monthly $10 Spotify charge? Or maybe the $25 haircut. Include everything that you purchase on a frequent basis, even those costs that automatically get deducted from your account. This will help you keep aware of what money is going out of your account. Bonus tip: Put the day of the month that each charge is due!
STEP 3: Save
It’ll be hard to not spend every penny of your paycheck. I mean you earned it right? But trust me, don’t! Saving will prepare you for whatever is to come in the future. Whether that’s your car breaking down or a trip with your friends, you want to be prepared for the good, the bad, and the ugly! Okay okay, you know you should save now, but how much? Well once you’ve figured out your earnings and expenses, the rest ideally should be for savings! Of course you can’t save every penny, cause it’s important to enjoy yourself too (see next point for that), but it’s advised to start saving more and you can always take some out if you underestimate what you need.
STEP 4: Treat yourself
Okay so you’re doing good at adulting, but where’s the silver lining? Here it is. Let yourself splurge sometimes! Make sure it falls in your budget of course, but enjoy your guilty pleasure. You’re working hard for some reward, right? “Treating yourself” looks different for everyone. Yours might entail going to a nice restaurant once a month, buying decor for your new house, purchasing clothes, or buying tickets for a concert. No matter what it is that excites you, leave room for it in your budget! It’ll make this new chapter exciting. I mean they do say, it can’t be all work and no play.
